I love taking hikes which are quite near to Villa Hipocampo and one of my favorites is Chemin de Nietzsche in Eze. Another gem that I shared with guests regularly, this trail has a great history, terrific views, and great nature as well. Starting on the coast in Eze-sur-Mer and ending at the beautiful medieval village of Eze, it’s a great adventure for people who want to combine exercise with exploration.
Eze-sur-mer is a 15-minute drive or bus ride from Villefranche and a simple addition to any itinerary. What makes the hike special is what you get at the top: the lovely village of Eze, with its stunning cactus garden, breathtaking views, and charming restaurants and cafes. On weekends, it’s home to a local food market where you can grab deliciously fresh socca, a local specialty, made to order at one of the area’s best stands.
It’s steep and rocky, so surprisingly, the hike up is usually easier than the hike down. Trust me on this! Hiking the trail is quite the challenge and can be hell on your knees. Make sure to wear good shoes, take plenty of water, and dress in layers to adjust to the changing temperatures as you climb.
The hike is not just a physical activity but also a mental one. The path is named after a philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who walked it regularly and found inspiration for some of his renowned ideas here. Familiarizing yourself with Nietzsche’s thoughts before hiking adds another dimension to the experience, and I enjoy discussing his concept with fellow hikers along the way.
After you’ve toured the village, I recommend skipping the trek back down and taking the bus from Eze to Moyen Corniche instead. This picturesque route, perched above the coastal road, offers yet another view of the breathtaking landscape of Côte d’Azur and will take you back to Villefranche in comfort.
After the hike, treat yourself to a meal or a drink in one of the village’s charming spots. Whether you opt for a glass of rosé paired with a stunning view or a filling meal to recharge, the restaurants here never disappoint. If you’re lucky enough to visit during the weekend, the food market is a must. Make sure to try the socca—it’s the best in the Nice area!
The Chemin de Nietzsche is more than just a hike; it’s an immersion into history, philosophy, and the unmatched beauty of the French Riviera. It’s one of those experiences that stays with you long after the trail ends, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
